Nature park Papuk

The main feature of the eastern part of the Croatian – Slavonia – are the lowland plains with large cultivated areas. From the plain that was once the bottom of the Pannonian Sea, mountains rise to almost a thousand meters above sea level. One of these mountains is Papuk – the most beautiful mountains in Slavonia. Nature Park area is a geologically most diverse area in this part of the Croatian. As a European and international initiatives to protect valuable geological heritage created associations such as the European Geoparks Network (EGN), and the Global Geoparks Network (GGN). Park Nature Park became a member of the aforementioned associations 2007th year, as the first Geopark from Croatian.

 

Jelas pond

Jelas ponds are protected 1995th decision of the Assembly of the County of Slavonski Brod-Posavina in the category of special ornithological reserve. The reserve covers 125 ha of ponds. Jelas ponds are part of the ecological network and the proposed entry into the European ecological network Natura 2000 as an important area for birds. Jelas field pond was declared internationally important bird area (IBA – Important Bird Areas).
Ponds are artificial wetlands. They are breeding, feeding, wintering birds. On Jelas ponds nesting spoonbill, gray heron, whiskered tern, river gull, wild goose. There we can see the small and the great white heron, gaka, yellow heron, ferruginous duck. Fields around the pond feeding sites are cranes and surrounding woods black stork nests. Ponds are an important habitat for otters.

 

Jelas field – Lowlands between the river Sava and highland Dilj. Most of the area consists of carp ponds some of which are covered with a thick and rich wetland vegetation and are preserved habitats for a variety of wetland birds, of which the most interesting Black-necked grebe (Podiceps nigricollis), yellow heron (Ardeaolla ralloides), Eurasian spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia), duck (Aythia Rufina), Ferruginous duck (Aythya nyroca) and a large nesting colony of river gulls (Larus ridibundus). Surrounding arable land, after the autumn harvest, are important resting place on migratory corridor for cranes (Grus grus), so the daily records are impressive flocks of hundreds of birds.
